Resistance switching at the nanometre scale in amorphous carbon

چکیده
The electrical transport and resistance switching mechanism in amorphous carbon (a-C) is investigated at the nanoscale. The electrical conduction in a-C thin films is shown to be captured well by a Poole–Frenkel transport model that involves nonisolated traps. Moreover, at high electric fields a field-induced threshold switching phenomenon is observed. The following resistance change is attributed to Joule heating and subsequent localized thermal annealing. We demonstrate that the mechanism is mostly due to clustering of the existing sp2 sites within the sp3 matrix. The electrical conduction behaviour, field-induced switching and Joule-heating-induced rearrangement of atomic order resulting in a resistance change are all reminiscent of conventional phasechange memory materials. This suggests the potential of a-C as a similar nonvolatile memory candidate material. 5 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. 6 Currently at Departament de Física Fonamental and Institut de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (IN2UB), Universitat de Barcelona, 08028 Barcelona, Spain. Engineering the next generation of large-area displays: prospects and pitfalls.
Considerable effort is currently expounded on the development and improvement of the myriad display technologies that have come to the market place. In this paper, several key questions are addressed in the development of the future generation of large-area field-emission-based displays based on semiconducting amorphous carbon thin films and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The development of carbon-ba...
متن کاملStructures, origin and evolution of various carbon phases in the ureilite Northwest Africa 4742 compared with laboratory-shocked graphite
Mineralogical structures of carbon phases within the ureilite North West Africa 4742, a recent find, are investigated at various scales by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman microspectrometry and X-ray diffraction. Ureilites are the most carbon-rich of all meteorites, containing up to 6 wt.% carbon. Diamond, graphite and so-called “amorphous carbon” are typically de...
متن کاملElastic constants and structural properties of nanometre-thick diamond- like carbon films
Carbon coatings of thickness down to 2 nm are needed to increase the storage density in magnetic hard disks and reach the 100-Gbitsyinch target. We show that the combination of surface Brillouin scattering, X-ray reflectivity and Raman spectroscopy 2 measurements allow us to measure the mechanical and structural properties of ultra-thin tetrahedral amorphous carbon films. Densities up to 2.8 gy...
متن کاملMapping functional groups on oxidised multi-walled carbon nanotubes at the nanometre scale.
Despite voluminous research on the acid oxidation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), there is a distinct lack of experimental results showing distributions of functional groups at the nanometre length scale. Here, functional peaks have been mapped across individual multi-walled CNTs with low-dose, monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the scanning transmission electron microscope (...
متن کاملNonvolatile resistive switching memory based on amorphous carbon
Resistive memory effect has been found in carbon nanostructure-based devices by Standley et al. Nano Lett. 8, 3345 2008 . Compared to nanostructures, hydrogenated amorphous carbon a-C:H has much more controllable preparation processes. Study on a-C:H-based memory is of great significance to applications of carbon-based electronic devices. We observed nonvolatile resistance memory behaviors in m...
